Maker Board Spotlight: LattePanda 3 Delta

The LattePanda team has released several pocket-sized single board computers over the past few years changing the market dynamics. But with increasing research and innovation among the embedded industry, the LattePanda group decided to unveil the high-performance LattePanda 3 Delta pocket-friendly hackable computer with the latest processor and extended product capabilities.

The launch of the new LattePanda 3 Delta is due to the rising demand for data-intensive applications. It gets a significant performance boost by upgrading from the Celeron N4100 of the older LattePanda Delta to the latest Intel 11th-generation Celeron N5105 processor. The manufacturer has claimed the CPU can deliver 2x faster speeds, and GPU speeds up to 3x more than the predecessor. The board also includes an Arduino Leonardo compatible microcontroller as a co-processor.

Let us look at the specifications of the LattePanda 3 Delta board and discuss it is the right option for your needs.

What is LattePanda 3 Delta?

LattePanda 3 Delta is a small form factor single board hackable computer that is smaller than iPhone 13 Pro. Well, that seems to be a weird comparison but the board measures only 125x76x16mm in size. Other than the main CPU upgrade, the hardware design features 8GB of LPDDR4 memory running at 2,933 MHz and 64GB of onboard eMMC storage which can be expanded if required. The board also gives the user an option to connect 4G/5G modules to give wireless connectivity in remote applications as well.

The hardware design comes with the support for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity with 2.7 times better transfer speeds than Wi-Fi 5. Besides this, LattePanda 3 Delta has featured a Gigabit ethernet port, which can connect to an Internet connection. On the software side, the board is compatible with both Windows 10 and Linux operating systems. Not to miss, LattePanda 3 Delta surprisingly also supports newly launched Windows 11 for developing GUI applications.

One of the crucial improvements is with a 50% larger cooling area than the previous generation models. As expected from the past LattePanda’s crowdfunding campaigns, LattePanda 3 Delta has raised more than 4x of the goal. This indirectly signifies the support from the user community and the positive expectations from the board in terms of the performance upgrades.

What can you do with LattePanda 3 Delta?

According to the LattePanda developers, “you can use it to watch 4K HDR videos smoothly and even play some heavy games”. For high-resolution video transfer, the hardware requires some really good GPU and CPU performance. In comparison, Raspberry Pi 4 which is a general-purpose SBC does not perform well for watching 4K HDR resolution videos.

The LattePanda 3 Delta can be a good choice for those looking to build a graphical user interface as it supports Windows 11. If you have been using the predecessor, then the makers have made sure the easy transition to the LattePanda 3 Delta by keeping the same connectors and layout.

The user can expect to be able to open many different web pages simultaneously in a web browser or even work on multiple virtual machines. With the upgrade in storage and OS support, the developer can work on more software and data without any external storage. LattePanda 3 Delta offers the control of all the USB ports and other power connectors for battery-dependent applications.

The hardware is well-suited in the development of IoT Edge, robotics, and AI camera-based applications. This pocket-friendly hardware can also be integrated into handheld and remote devices. Even with the boom of Industry 4.0, the tiny hardware can suit AI-based robotic applications.

Final thoughts on LattePanda 3 Delta

With 22 days remaining (at the time of writing) for the crowdfunding campaign, we can expect to see more support from the online user community. The pre-launch success seems to come from the integration of feedback from the existing LattePanda community. The developers and makers are happy and excited about the new hardware launching itself into the embedded market.

The larger cooling fan area is expected to keep the hardware from heating even under heavy workload conditions. The specifications have outperformed many of the existing boards from competitors and it's the fastest board manufactured by the LattePanda team. Even though the claims are very intriguing, the actual benchmarks are something to look forward to. The performance will vary depending on the intensity of data processing, the type of workload, and tasks performed.

Moreover, the hardware is currently looking for more backers to fund the production and there is still some more time to back this campaign should you want to. Backers will receive the LattePanda 3 Delta for a $229.00 pledge and can increase the amount they wish to pledge depending on the additional accessories. The estimated delivery starts from March/April 2022 and can be shipped anywhere in the world.
