Single Core RISC-V ESP32 C6 brings WiFi 6 and Matter to the Party
On this week's Electromaker Show we discussed the recent release of the ESP32 C6.
Well, we say release, it was more a case of them announcing it was released and it immediately going out of stock due to shortages, but we have been assured more devkits will be available from Mouser and Adafruit alongside the usual AliExpress store soon.
Update: At the time of writing, Adafruit has the module but not the devkit in stock!
Other than availability issues, there was one piece of good news. The initial announcement of the ESP32-C6 way back in April 2021 failed to mention support for Zigbee and Thread. This was either an oversight, or something has changed since then, as an 802.15.4 radio is present, along with full Matter compatibility on the software side.
Here's the timed segment from this week's Electromaker Show about the EPS32-C6:
The module will undoubtedly find its way into many IoT devices wanting to take advantage of the upgrades WiFi 6 brings, especially in terms of power consumption. The DevKits on show also seem nicely balanced to get the most out of the chip, exposing almost all of the GPIO pins and providing an RGB LED, which can give a surprising amount of user feedback when configured well.
As soon as the board or module comes back into stock, we'll be sure to let you know! Update: At the time of writing, Adafruit has the module but not the devkit in stock!
