Story

Introduction

Access to clean drinking water is essential, especially in public places, schools, offices, and rural areas. Traditional water dispensing systems often require manual operation and continuous power supply. Using solar power for clean and purifying water is a really smart idea and we develop the vending machine like our idea.  To solve this problem, we developed a Solar-Powered RFID Water Vending Machine using ESP32 that combines renewable energy, cashless access, and IoT-based automation.

This system uses RFID authentication for user access and solar energy for powering the machine, making it efficient, portable, and suitable for smart water distribution applications.

Features

  • Solar-powered operation

  • RFID-based user authentication

  • ESP32-based smart controller

  • Automated water dispensing system

  • Real-time monitoring capability

  • Low power consumption

  • Touch-free operation

  • Suitable for smart campuses and public spaces

How the System Works

The vending system starts by powering the ESP32 through a solar-powered battery system. Users authenticate themselves using RFID cards. Once the RFID card is verified, the ESP32 activates the relay module, which controls the water pump and dispenses water automatically.

The flow sensor monitors the amount of water dispensed, while the display shows system status and user interaction messages.

Role of ESP32

ESP32 works as a main controller and it controls all the systems in this project. ESP32 acts as the main controller of the entire vending machine system.

It handles:

  • RFID communication

  • Water dispensing logic

  • Sensor monitoring

  • Relay control

  • Power management

  • Wireless connectivity for future IoT integration

Its low power consumption makes it ideal for solar-powered embedded applications.

Simply Rfid scanner is on and esp32 verify the rfid after verification relays will be on after this pump will be on and water despense.

Solar Power Integration

The system uses a solar panel connected to a rechargeable battery setup. During daytime, solar energy charges the battery and powers the system simultaneously. In this solar power integration is possible with the help of rechargeable battery, power management circuit and solar pannel.

Benefits of Solar Integration

  • Reduced electricity dependency

  • Eco-friendly operation

  • Suitable for outdoor deployment

  • Lower operational costs

  • Continuous operation in remote areas

Applications
  • Smart campuses

  • Railway stations

  • Offices

  • Factories

  • Public water dispensing systems

  • Rural water supply systems

  • Smart city infrastructure

Challenges FacedPower Optimization

Managing stable power delivery using solar energy required efficient battery and charging management.

Water Flow Accuracy

Calibrating the flow sensor for accurate dispensing was important for consistent output.

Outdoor Deployment

The system had to be designed for reliable operation in outdoor environmental conditions.

Result section

Here is the result of our vending machine. Here is the working video and lab testing video:

Future Improvements
  • Mobile app integration

  • QR-based payment support

  • Cloud dashboard monitoring

  • AI-based usage analytics

  • Remote maintenance alerts

  • Multi-user management system

Conclusion

This Solar-Powered RFID Water Vending Machine demonstrates how embedded systems, IoT, and renewable energy can be combined to create smart and sustainable automation solutions. Using ESP32 and RFID technology, the system provides secure, automated, and energy-efficient water dispensing for modern smart infrastructure projects.
