Story

Introduction

Geo-fencing is a location-based technology that creates a virtual boundary around a specific geographical area. When an object enters or leaves this predefined zone, an alert can be triggered automatically. In this project, we build a GPS-based Geo-Fencing System using Arduino Uno that continuously tracks live location data and sends SMS alerts whenever the monitored device crosses the defined boundary. This GPS based Geo-Fetching system alerts when the specified thing leaves the preferred safe zone. This device provides strong security to the user or user’s thing.

How the System Works

The system uses a GPS module to obtain real-time latitude and longitude coordinates. The Arduino Uno processes this location data and compares it with the predefined geo-fence coordinates.

If the device moves outside the permitted area, the Arduino immediately communicates with the GSM module and sends an SMS notification to the registered mobile number. Once the device returns within the safe zone, another notification can also be generated.

Circuit Connections

GPS Module to Arduino Uno

  • VCC → 5V

  • GND → GND

  • TX → Digital Pin 4

  • RX → Digital Pin 3

GSM Module to Arduino Uno

  • VCC → External Power Supply

  • GND → GND

  • TX → Digital Pin 8

  • RX → Digital Pin 7

Receive alerts whenever a vehicle leaves a designated area.

School Transportation

Monitor school buses and receive notifications when they move beyond approved routes.

Asset Tracking

Track valuable equipment and mobile assets.

Personal Safety

Monitor elderly family members, children, or pets.

Advantages
  • Easy to build and deploy

  • Reliable GPS-based monitoring

  • Instant mobile alerts

  • No internet connection required for SMS notifications

  • Scalable for larger tracking systems

Conclusion

This Arduino Uno GPS Geo-Fencing System demonstrates how location tracking and SMS communication can be combined to create an effective monitoring solution. By continuously checking GPS coordinates and sending alerts whenever the device crosses predefined boundaries, the system provides an affordable and reliable security solution for various real-world applications.

Developers looking to extend such tracking systems for commercial products may also consider working with an experienced Arduino programmer for hire to accelerate development and customization. This solution is beneficial for pet tracking, vehicle tracking and child safety.
