How to boot straight into Kodi on the Raspberry Pi?

Post »

I'm setting up a Raspberry Pi-based Kodi HTPC. Instead of using a Kodi OS like OSMC or LibreELEC, I decided to instead simply install Kodi on top of Raspbian. That way, I can install RetroPie for gaming and also use my Pi for stuff like web browsing. However, I want to set my Raspberry Pi to boot straight into Kodi. How can it configure my Pi to launch Kodi at start?

I got you. First up, install Kodi:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install kodi
Next, you can either set Kodi to autostart at boot by navigating to the terminal and running:

Code: Select all

sudo tee -a /lib/systemd/system/kodi.service <<_EOF_
[Unit] Description = Kodi Media Center
After = remote-fs.target network-online.target
Wants = network-online.target

[Service]
User = pi
Group = pi
Type = simple
ExecStart = /usr/bin/kodi-standalone
Restart = on-abort
RestartSec = 5

[Install]
WantedBy = multi-user.target
_EOF_
Then, enable that service:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl enable kodi.service
Alternately, run:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart
Next, add a line at the beginning and enter:

Code: Select all

@kodi
Save and exit with Ctrl + X, Y.
